Adler’s Reading Strategy requires students to read a text or a passage three times to help them develop their reading comprehension skills. After each reading, the student will ask themselves particular questions in relation to the text.
This strategy is particularly useful when reading a variety of tests. Students are asked to identify the text structure and extract the “main idea”. What is the author trying to tell me?
Then, students are guided to ask question and narrow down the main ideas. Adler’s strategy also recommends note taking structures for various texts.
As we know, literacy is key to learning. Our students must first learn to read, so that they can read to learn!
Therefore, this approach and strategy should be encouraged an implemented in all courses and is not limited to language classrooms!
