Limitless? – Where will AI take us?
Well let me tell you, you do. And it comes in the form of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Chat-GPT, Magic Write, Dall-E… all of these programs have the ability to expand your creativity, and expedite output, the question is… are you taking advantage?
Now, as a high school teacher, I know first hand what the implications of these tools are on our students' work. I have already caught two students who “cheated” using these programs and probably a few more who have slipped through my fingers. However, I don’t fear the future with AI. I don’t fear that it will replace me as a teacher. The teaching profession will always remain, because one of the biggest student motivators is the human connection. Making real connections to their surroundings and developing a sense of belonging is what keeps kids in school, and this cannot be created with a robot.
So, what does this mean for schools, students, teachers and AI.
I think we need to embrace it, come to terms with the fact that this is our future. At AI’s growth rate, if you are not on board with its multiple uses and how they can benefit you, then you will be left behind. For the next generations, not knowing how to use AI effectively and ethically, will be the same as our previous generations living in today's world and not knowing how to “google” something.
Therefore, we need to educate our youth to use AI responsibly and to their advantage.
Here are 10 reasons why we need to teach AI use (generated by Chat-GPT, modified by me).
Preparing students for the future job market: AI is increasingly becoming an integral part of many industries, and knowledge of AI technology will be a valuable skill for students entering the job market.
Developing critical thinking skills: Teaching AI use can help students develop critical thinking skills as they learn to analyze data, identify patterns, and make decisions based on that data.
Encouraging innovation: Learning about AI can inspire students to think outside the box and develop innovative solutions to real-world problems.
Providing practical skills: AI skills can be applied in a variety of fields, including healthcare, finance, education, and transportation, among others. Students with knowledge of AI can apply these skills in their future careers.
Enhancing creativity: AI technology can be used to create art, music, and other forms of creative content. Teaching students about AI can help them explore new forms of creativity.
Improving decision-making: AI technology can help students make more informed decisions by analyzing data and providing insights.
Encouraging collaboration: AI projects often require collaboration between individuals with different skill sets. Teaching AI use can encourage teamwork and collaboration among students.
Promoting ethical considerations: AI technology can have significant impacts on society, and it is essential to consider the ethical implications of its use. Teaching AI use can help students understand the importance of ethical considerations.
Fostering global citizenship: AI technology is a global issue that affects people worldwide. Teaching AI use can help students develop a global perspective and become responsible global citizens.
Empowering students: AI technology has the potential to solve some of the world's most pressing problems. Teaching AI use can empower students to make a positive difference in the world.
